Sunday 17th May 2009 The Colours of Armenia: Art Exhibition of School Children
The completion of a successful joint project run by AGBU London and K. Tahta Armenian Sunday School was marked by an exhibition and award ceremony presenting the paintings of K. Tahta’s talented students.
The project ‘Armenia and the Colours of Through the Eyes of Children in the Diaspora’ was initiated by AGBU London with the incentive of developing and broadening the Diaspora Armenian student knowledge of Armenian Artists and Armenia
’s artistic heritage. To further encourage student participation a competition with cash prizes to be won for the best paintings was organised.
K. Tahta agreed to dedicate time and effort for such a valuable project and therefore held classes focusing on educating the students with the life and works of famous Armenian artists. These included Sarian, Avetisyam and Gorki, to name a few. Ms. Arax Nazarian, the school’s art teacher together with her colleagues, worked closely with the students teaching different artistic techniques and encouraging them to apply such methods to their own pieces of work. With such dedication, a successful 70 students submitted paintings applying the Armenian theme to their pieces of work.
On 17th May 2009 the 70 works were exhibited to the public. As a means of fund raising for the school, AGBU London printed postcards of each painting to allow the public to purchase.
After students presented to the audience their new knowledge of Armenian art, the Chair of AGBU London, Ms. Noushig Setrakian, awarded prizes to each participant and winners of the project. There were in total 7 winners; a private panel of judges determined 3 winners in each of the two age groups and one winner was voted on the day by public poll.
The project was shown to be a great success, uniting the community in
London to educate the younger generation of the rich Armenian artistic heritage.
