Stepanakert

Stepanakert is the captial of the NKR (Nagorno Karabagh Republic) with an estimated population of 40,000.

At present the AGBU is particularly active in supporting the Armenian population of Artsakh to help them return to a semblance of normality. It has invested considerable sums in rebuilding infrastructure as well as shattered homes and lives by providing accommodation for families of those who made the ultimate sacrifice of their lives for their nation and by re-establishing and resettling communities in the border regions.

Thanks to the donations of Louise Manoogian Simone, Chairman of the Board of Directors of AGBU, secondary school # 7, the biggest school in Stepanakert is currently under construction and the once ruined town is rising from the ashes due to her ongoing support; the reconstruction of the half-destroyed hotel building has already finished and it is now a residential building for the families of perished freedom fighters, disabled people and servicemen.

The Artsakh Chamber Orchestra which was also founded and sponsored by the AGBU, gave a new impetus to the cultural life of the town. The concerts of the Artsakh Chamber Orchestra bring in so many listeners that there are even standing people during performances. After the Karabakh war, string instruments have come to replace the arms in Stepanakert. Life has changed a lot for the better and the AGBU has and continues to play a significant part in this.
